Karen's Classes

Karen has been an arts and crafts instructor for many years. Having experience with adults and children in many different art  mediums, she is now a dedicated soft sculptured doll  designer and instructor.  Karen prides herself on good communication skills, all students are helped through the detailed steps to achieve their own hand-crafted doll. Loads of fun and an excellent learning experience. "I love communicating about my cloth doll making techniques and am available to share what I have learned in various teaching workshops." Descriptions of classes are listed below.


KING LEOPOLD : 2 day workshop. This is a very detailed 18 inch, soft sculpted lion. He has a fully jointed body and is quite easily posed. He is fashioned from 2 different types of body fabric and is colored using oil pastels. Attention is spent on needle sculpting and body construction as well as coloration of the head and feet. His costume will not be done in class but the techniques for the clothing construction with be discussed. Intermediate to advanced skills recommended Class size not to exceed 17

Kit Fee — $ 25. This includes, template material, fabric for the head, paws and feet, fabric for the body, buttons and beads for joints, whisker material, eyes, a large safety pin, a rubber band, thread for sculpting, the use of my pastels and pencils and a piece of imported German synthetic fur for his mane.

Kit fee plus pattern is $35.00


Renaissance Rabbit : 2 day workshop. This is a wonderful 18 inch, soft sculpted rabbit wearing a jester costume and carrying his own jester stick. In this workshop we will emphasize the sculpting of the head, feet and paws as well as their coloration and shading We will also cover how to stuff and joint the body for maximum flexibility. This doll will not be clothed in class but we will cover the various techniques used to make his costume. Intermediate to advanced skills recommended Class size not to exceed 17

Face Basics: 1 day workshop. This is a class for anyone who could or would like to have a few pointers on taking the terror out of making a face on a doll. We will cover the basics on placement of features and work first on paper, progress onto a flat face and then finish off with a simple sculpted head with features and inset eyes. We will cover the finer points of drawing with a pencil or pen and then work on shading to add depth. It’s a fun class. The finished heads will be suitable to make into pins or brooches. The student may bring a doll from any one of my patterns and get help on the face.

All skills levels welcome.                Class size not to exceed 17

Kit Fee – $ 12.00 This includes notebook for drawing, a hand out with instruction for sketching and shading a face, a simple diagram to needle sculpt a head and how to insert 3 dimensional eyes with eyelids. Kit includes a pair of plastic eyes, felting needle, a flat stuffed head and a dimensional face for sculpting. Mohair will be provided for both doll pins. No sewing machine required.


Pawsha the Tiger: 2 day Workshop: The student will learn to make an 18 inch, flexible, characterized tiger. Skills learned in the class include sculpting in cloth, painting tiger features, sewing on faux fur and jointing the body. Unique materials are used to paint Pawsha's features and make his stripes. Clothing will not necessarily be done in class, but will be discussed. Samples will be present to give detailed example of what the clothing will look like. Class size not to exceed 17   Intermediate to advanced skills recommended

Kit Fee–$25 Includes template material, fabric for the body, eyes, buttons and beads for joints, whisker materials, synthetic fur for the ruff, and the use of my colored pencils and sculpting thread. Note: if the pattern has not been previously purchased please add $12.00 to the above price.

Face and Hand Sculpting: 1 day Workshop Basic sculpting to make a human style head and hands. We will cover needle sculpting the head, coloring a face and then apply a woven mohair wig. We will needle sculpt and wire a hand to create a more realistic appearance to a dolls hands. Techniques learned can be applied to future dolls the student may create. Class size not to exceed 17     All skill levels welcome.

Kit Fee- $ 13 Includes a pre-sewn head and hands, chenille stems, a pair of plastic eyes, sculpting thread, the use of class pens and pencils, and a piece of woven mohair for the wig. A paper pattern is supplied so that the student may practice these skills later on their own. No sewing machine required. All levels of doll makers welcome. 


Results

The final product of any class are subject to the skill and experience level of the student, but Karen has a reputation of ensuring that all students have a good time, and obtain new skills and understanding of cloth doll making relative to that particular class.
